Book Description

The Venetian Administration’s Archive constitutes the most ancient section of the richest Historical Archive of Leucade. The island came under Venetian rule no sooner than 1684 and formed the basis for the control of the key post of Ambrakikos gulf through the fortresses of Vónitsa and Prévesa. For that reason the administration of these fortresses was bestowed to the island’s Provveditòr Estraordinario di Santa Máura and the costumary island’s Provveditòr Ordinario.

In this First Part 630 survived volumes of the Provveditori Estraordinarii Books are presented according to the original classification by tenure of each one Provveditòr, sealing of the specific content, duration from the end of 1716. The Books are shared in 30 tenures. From earlier times (1685 a.f.) only three books, dated in the years 1691, 1698-1699 and 1700-1701 are preserved, on account of the fire in the fort of Santa Máura in 1715.

The content of those Books is almost completely judicial. The present work follows the registration of permanent state effect’s Book series (Proclames, criminal cases (Criminal Court’s Variorum, Sentense’s Register) and financial (Notifications of Debts, Pay Office and Seizures by Provveditori Estraordinarii and Sea’s General Provisors. With asterisks we clarify various issues related to content, structure and even the fate of the archival material.
