Book Description

This book by an established researcher of the Cypriot Press, particularly of the period of British rule, is the first volume in the series Βιβλιοθήκη Εγκυκλοπαίδειας του Ελληνικού Τύπου, 1784-1996 (Library of the Encyclopaedia of Greek Press, 1784-1996). Providing references, summaries and frequent unedited quotations from the regular columns, Magda M Kitromilidou summarizes the principal issues presented by the newspaper Paphos from 1921 to 1950, a period that was decisive for the history of Cyprus. The book covers foreign policy and diplomacy; domestic administration; issues related to the Church and culture; sports and efforts for modernization of the technology. At its heart lies the question of Enosis (Union with Greece) and the various ways it was accordingly dealt with. Cyprus’s history of that period is thus reflected, as well as its daily life, by assuming the vantage point of Loizos Philippou (1895-1950), the scholarly lawyer and journalist, but also conscientious citizen and patriot who was the newspaper’s publisher, and its editor-in-chief for most of the time.
