Book Description

Neophytos Vamvas (1776/7-1855) was a priest and scholar from the island of Chios. He collaborated with Korais for many years. One of the first professors of the University of Athens, he was distinguished for his teaching as well as an author. He studied and taught philosophy, especially moral philosophy, and was influenced by the philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment. In 1829-1830, while Vamvas was teaching philosophy at the Ionian Academy at Corfu, he prepared a Greek translation of the essay Outlines of Moral Philosophy, a work by Dugald Steward, an important representative of Scottish moral philosophy. The text was preserved among the manuscripts of a student of Vamvas, Elias Aliprantis (1808-1885). This book is a scholarly edition of Vamvas’ translation.
