Book Description

Second Edition Revised.

The re-establishment of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1454 allowed the Orthodox Christians to have again a supreme ecclesiastical authority and, at the same time, an institutional organisation of their society. However, among the written sources of the first Post-Byzantine period (1454-1498), only forty two official patriarchal documents have been located in archives and libraries in Greece and abroad. This publication comes as a precious tool for historical research, in which the researcher can find the forty two extant texts collected in a useful and sound edition. A wide range of issues emerges in the texts concerning the internal affairs of the Church, encyclical texts sent by the supreme ecclesiastical authority to the Orthodox Christians living in the Ottoman Empire, texts regarding the relations of the Orthodox Church with the Ottoman state, the Roman Catholic Church and foreign leaders. The volume also contains a general index of names and terms, a table comprising the archives and libraries where the original documents or their copies are currently located, and a table of the official texts corresponding with the acts included in the work of the same authors Οι Πράξεις του Πατριαρχείου Κωνσταντινουπόλεως / Les Regestes des Actes du Patriarchat de Constantinople (Athens 2013).
The book in hand is a second, revised edition, because the first edition (Athens 2011) was sold out and, mainly, because of the addition of one more text, the re-dating of specific patriarchates based on the work of the same authors Οι Πράξεις του Πατριαρχείου Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, (Athens 2013), the discovery of latent manuscripts that led to the improvement in the edition of particular texts, and the recent literature. The book has been published within the framework of a Program funded by the Onassis Foundation.
