Book Description

This pioneering collective work draws on hitherto neglected Russian and Ukrainian archives in order to shed light on the presence of Greek populations in significant port cities of the Azofic Sea. It focuses on a “chain of cities” including Taganrog, Rostov, Mariupol and Berdiansk. Between 1774 and 1917 these port cities flourished economically as well as socially and attracted populations from the Ionian and the Aegean, who were active in trade and shipping. Greeks from the islands of Cephalonia, Ithaca, Mykonos, Santorini, Psara and Chios formed communities that contributed to the growth of the port cities of the Azofic Sea and contributed to their connection with Western Europe and international trade.
