This book is devoted to the first three provincial governors of Andros, Georgios Kliris, Konstantinos Rados and Ivos Rigas. These three young men were committed to the nation’s liberation and independence, they adhered to the Greek Revolution’s ideals, they served its institutions and they were inspired by them. Filiki Eteria was their common starting point; although their participation in the secret society left a deep imprint on their lives and contributed to the formation of long-lasting bonds, it had to remain in obscurity even after the consolidation of the Revolution. They became provincial governors of Andros, an island the course of which during the Revolution of 1821 had been similar, but in many ways distinct from that of the other Aegean islands. This book examines, among other topics, the intense political processes and social conflicts, the relationship between the island’s notables and the revolutionary government, the issue of tax collection and administration as well as the islanders’ everyday life during the Revolution. The last part of the book includes 80 documents related to the three men’s time as provincial governors of Andros, published here for the first time.
