Book Description
The volume Ali Pasha and His Era contains papers presented at the international conference held in October 2021 in Ioannina. During a period of profound upheaval for Europe and the world -the age of revolutions, the crisis of empires, and the emergence of nations- Ali Pasha, an Ottoman pasha of Albanian origin who used Greek as his language of communication and made Ioannina the center of his power, established, together with members of his family, an extensive zone of political and economic dominance that extended far beyond his original administrative jurisdiction. He was a powerful, complex, and controversial figure –both admired and despised– who, after his death, was either demonized or idealized. In any case, his image has been subject to diverse interpretations and uses by history, politics, art, and literature. In the final phase of his life, he became directly entangled with the Greek Revolution and its development, both personally and through his close circle. He is part of Μodern Greek history while also belonging to Ottoman, Albanian, Balkan, and broader European history of the early 19th century.
