Book Description
How did Greece’s first, and internationally oriented, commercial and maritime center transform into a small industrial city? Relying on extensive archival research and other contemporary sources, as well as on-site tangible traces of Hermoupolis’ industrial past, this study seeks to trace the process of this transformation. By focusing on external factors and historical circumstances, the details of establishing and managing industrial enterprises, the tug-of-war between traditional craftsmanship and new technology and the social structuring and restructuring of the city, this two-volume work, the result of extended research, aims to provide insights into the history of Greek industry.
