Book Description

Athens and Thebes, major urban centers in Greece during the middle Byzantine period, are the focus of the studies published in this volume. The two cities belonged to the same administrative unit and served successively as the capital of the theme of Hellas, while also serving as important centers of craft and commercial activity. The studies focus on various aspects of life in the two cities and their wider region during the period under examination, as well as on the development of their economic and artistic ties. Alongside written sources, the study of archaeological evidence plays a significant role, contributing decisively to the reconstruction of administrative history and social and economic life, as well as to our understanding of the relationships between the two cities, shedding light on aspects previously unknown to research.
