Book Description

This book proposes a pluralistic approach to the analysis and interpretation of local history. Taking Karytaina, a medieval settlement in Arcadia, as its case study, it seeks to enrich contemporary historiography and to connect microhistory with broader questions that concern historians of political, economic, social, and demographic history. It offers an original framework for studying local history as a field through which wider historical transformations can be understood.

Through the combined use of a wide range of bibliographical and archival sources, oral testimonies, and material evidence, the volume highlights demographic changes, social and economic structures, migration routes, relations with political institutions and collective bodies, as well as the processes through which local memory and identity were formed.

The book adopts an interdisciplinary microhistorical approach, bringing together demographic, socio-economic, and political history with public history. Through this synthesis, Karytaina emerges as a dynamic methodological laboratory for understanding modern history from the 19th to the 21st century.
